Freeview+ kicks out Playback
04 July 2008

Freeview is to dump its Playback brand in favour of Freeview+ to denote its digital TV recorders.

The coming months will see the Freeview+ name roll out on packaging and in stores, as the terrestrial TV platform works to raise awareness and sales of its hard disk recorders.

A major push is also promised in the run up to Christmas, with details still to be released.

The terrestrial TV platform has decided to follow Sky+ and Virgin Media's V+ because, said Freeview general manager Ilse Howling, viewers now understood the terminology.

When the Playback name was chosen two-and-a-half years ago, there was not the wide awareness of what "+" was about, she said.

Freeview will be pushing the digital TV recording (DTR) market heavily this year.

At the moment, it is growing by around 76 per cent a year.
